Helpful tips for the recipe before starting
For the best results there are a few essentials to this recipe. The recipe is very simple to make but there are a few steps that need to be taken and your understanding of why you need to do them.
- What is the best cheese to use? For this recipe I suggest shredding your own cheese. However, you can use pre-shredded cheese for the recipe because of the flour, more on that below.
- The flour helps thicken the casserole. Otherwise the pineapples would cause a soupy mess. But, the flour doesn’t allow the cheese to melt together properly. This is the reason why you need to stir the casserole in the middle of cooking. The flour makes the recipe better but creates the same issue that the starch on pre-shredded cheese creates.
Making the pineapple cheese casserole
- First, preheat the oven to 350F.
- Next in a bowl, add the shredded cheese, sugar, pineapple juice and mix it together with the flour. This will not be perfect.
- Then, add in the drained pineapple and add the mix into a 8×8 baking dish. Bake for 30 minutes.
- While the pineapple cheese casserole is baking, crush ritz crackers and toss with melted butter in a large bag or bowl.
- At 30 minutes, remove the casserole from the oven and carefully mix with a spoon. Then, add the buttered ritz crackers on top.
- Bake a remaining 15-20 minutes or until top is golden brown. Remove the casserole from the oven.
- Allow to cool before serving.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Can I use fresh pineapple instead?
For this recipe I recommend canned. You can use fresh and if you want to give it a try measure out 26 ounces of fresh pineapple chunks. But, with can you have a more reliable product and you get the pineapple juice which is used in the recipe.
Does pineapple go well with cheese? How does it taste?
Cheese and pineapple go very well together and you have a complex amount of flavors within this recipe. The pineapple with the added sugar makes these sweet chunks in every bite. But the creamy cheese provides a light saltiness then the buttery topping is crunchy and well, buttery. All the flavors melt together beautifully and it’s almost addicting how good it is.
