Cheddar bay sausage balls are perfect for the holidays or game day. These sausage balls are a mix of Red Lobster’s Cheddar Bay Biscuit mix with my sausage ball recipe to turn these into something special. They are super easy to make and pack a ton of flavor!
Recipe Highlights
- How they taste: Cheddar bay sausage balls use ground breakfast sausage like any other recipe. But, replacing Bisquick with Red Lobster’s Cheddar Bay Biscuit Mix and adding in a coule extra seasoning makes them special. Fold in cheddar cheese then top with the packaged seasoning and you won’t have any leftovers.
- Skill level: A super easy recipe. All you do is mix the ingredients, roll, then bake. Everything is straight forward and simple.
- Storing: Sausage balls are great because they can be made ahead and frozen for later.
Ingredient tips
- Sausage: Traditionally, breakfast sausage is used here. But, you can switch to turkey or even Italian sausage and still have a great recipe.
- Red Lobster Biscuit Mix: This will replace the traditional Bisquick or pancake mix that’s used to create sausage balls.
- Cheese: Any cheese will work and you can get away with pre-shredded cheese here to make the recipe easier. I do recommend using sharp cheddar cheese to really make the cheddar bay sausage balls come to life.
Chef’s tips
- You need the extra seasoning. If you’ve ever made cheddar bay biscuits before, there is a small seasoning pack to brush across the tops of the biscuits. That is not enough seasoning for several sausage balls or to really get that cheddar bay flavor.
- A quick tip, to really kick these sausage balls up, use the seasoning mix with butter and brush across each sausage ball before serving for added flavor.
How To Make Cheddar Bay Sausage Balls

- Now, mix together the ingredients for the cheddar bay sausage balls in a bowl. Then, roll them out by hand, you’ll get around 30 with a large cookie scoop.

How long to cook cheddar bay sausage balls?
They will bake for about 15 minutes. This will cook the sausage to the perfect temp and give the sausage balls time to puff up.
Can you freeze them?
Yes, you can freeze before or after baking. If you make them ahead, you can freeze the cheddar bay sausage balls after rolling them. Then bake from frozen, you may have to add a little more baking time.

Cheddar Bay Sausage Balls
Ingredients
- 1 pound ground sausage (breakfast sausage not Italian)
- 1 box Red Lobster Cheddar Bay Biscuit Mix
- 3/4 cup sharp cheddar cheese (90g, shredded)
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 4 tablespoon butter
Instructions
- First, preheat the oven to 400°F.
- In a mixing bowl, add the ground sausage, all the contents from the Red Lobster biscuit mix minus the silver packet, salt, garlic powder and onion powder. Mix those together then fold the cheese into the dough.
- If you have a stand mixer, mixing will be simple, put it in and let it go. If not, work the ingredients together with your hand kneading the sausage and the flour until everything is even. This will take about 5 minutes to do.
- Now, using a cookie scoop or a kitchen spoon, scoop the sausage ball dough in your hand and roll the sausage balls. I was able to get 25-30 sausage balls with this recipe the few times I've made it.
- When removed from the oven, melt the butter then add in the sliver packet along with these extra seasonings (1/4 tsp salt, 1 tsp garlic powder, 1 tsp dried parsley, 1/2 tsp onion powder) into the butter. You'll need the extra seasoning for the flavor to really come through. Brush the sausage balls then serve when cooled.
