Cheddar bay sausage balls are a trick to the traditional recipe by using Red Lobsters biscuit mix for the best flavor.
One thing about the holidays are the great appetizers like green onion dip, chicken wings and sausage balls.
Normally, sausage balls are made with bisquick or all purpose flour. But, these cheddar bay sausage balls are made using the biscuit mix from red lobster.
I’ve tested these and after making several versions of sausage balls these cheddar bay sausage balls needed a few tweaks to really bring out that Red Lobster flavor.
Garlic and onion really stand out in the biscuits with the sharp cheddar cheese and butter topping. They are super easy to make but I am going to share my tips to make them even better.
How To Make Cheddar Bay Sausage Balls
Ingredients Needed
- Ground breakfast sausage
- Red Lobster Biscuit Mix
- Shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- Salt, onion powder & garlic powder
These are the tips that make this the best version
- You need the extra seasoning. If you’ve ever made cheddar bay biscuits before that small seasoning pack to brush across the tops of the biscuits. That is not enough seasoning for several sausage balls.
- A quick tip, to really kick these sausage balls up, use the seasoning mix with butter and brush across each sausage ball before serving for added flavor.
Making the cheddar bay sausage balls
- First, preheat the oven to 400F.
- In a mixing bowl, add the ground sausage, all the contents from the Red Lobster biscuit mix, salt, garlic powder and onion powder. Mix those together then fold the cheese into the dough.
- If you have a stand mixer, mixing will be simple, put it in and let it go. If not, work the ingredients together with your hand kneading the sausage and the flour until everything is even. This will take about 5 minutes to do.
- Now, using a cookie scoop or a kitchen spoon, scoop the sausage ball dough in your hand and roll the sausage balls. I was able to get 33 sausage balls with this recipe.
- Bake in the preheated oven until the sausage balls at least reach an internal temp of 145F according to USDA*. This will take about 15 minutes, they cook really fast.
- Remove from oven and use the tip above to brush them or serve them as is after they have cooled a bit. If you choose to brush them use the same amount of salt, garlic powder, onion powder but add dried parsley (1 tsp) with about 4 tablespoons of butter.
Should you dip the sausage balls?
I think they are perfect as is but some great dips are:
- Marinara sauce
- Cherry tomato sauce
- Ranch Dressing
- Blue cheese dressing
- Avocado Lime Ranch
What goes with sausage balls?
Sausage balls are a great appetizer or finger food. They work great alone or as a side dish.

Are you supposed to cook the sausage first?
No the sausage is cooked in the oven
I made these for a potluck luncheon, everyone loved them, I was told that I could bring the sausage balls to every potluck luncheon. FYI in number two on your instructions it does not say to add the cheese, but knew that I had to. lol I will definitely make these again and again
Thank you for your recipe Connie
Thanks, I fixed that.
