Big Mac sliders are a fun and homemade way to enjoy the classic burger. A fun-sized version featuring American cheese, pickles, onion and the special sauce in a buttery Hawaiian dinner roll topped with sesame seeds. Perfect for game day, grilling season, holidays or any day is perfect to enjoy these sliders!
Recipe Highlights
- How they taste: They taste like smaller Big Mac’s but minus the extra bread in the middle. Big Mac sliders feature a super authentic special sauce that is almost exact to the restaurants. A ton of website use ketchup in their recipe and this is an error which robs the exact flavor of the original. Everything you love about the sandwich you’ll find in these Big Mac sliders.
- Skill level: A super easy recipe to make. Once in the oven, you’ll need to keep an eye on the sliders because the bread will brown fast. It’s a great recipe for any day of the week for it’s ease and short cooking time.
- Storage: Big Mac sliders can be made ahead and cooked later or perfect for storing any leftovers. There are a few tips I’ll share below if you decide to freeze the leftovers in place of storing them in the fridge.
Ingredient tips
- Meat: Ground beef is used here in the recipe. I recommend 85/15 for the extra fat and flavor but leaner ground beef won’t be an issue at all and it’ll be a little cleaner with the excess fat.
- Seasoning: I worked at the restaurant and the seasoning for the hamburgers are salt, pepper and flavor enhancement. At home, I suggest salt and pepper only but if you’d like to use seasoning salt with enhancements the Big Mac sliders will still come out delicious.
- Cheese: Sliced American cheese is the standard. I wouldn’t stray from that for the most authentic taste but you can switch to cheddar cheese for something that isn’t as processed. Cheddar will change the overall flavor though.
- Dinner rolls: There are several offerings for dinner rolls. The recipe calls for Hawaiian sweet rolls but you have the option of butter bread, brioche and a simple dinner roll. Hawaiian rolls aren’t original but they’re super delicious. You’ll get a more authentic flavor from a plain dinner roll or butter bread.
Chef’s tips
- American cheese is what’s used on Big Mac’s. However, it doesn’t melt the best. A quick tips is to tent the Big Mac sliders with aluminum foil for 5 minutes then remove the foil and bake the 10 minutes to give the cheese more time to melt. That’s only if it’s important to you to have melty cheese because the cheese will melt slightly without the tenting.
- There are several versions of the special sauce sold in stores now. For ease, you purchase one of those in place of making it from home.
- Make the sauce a day ahead. Sauces and dressings are always better the next day when the ingredients have had time to meld together.
How To Make Big Mac Sliders
- Start by ground the ground beef. Next, slice the dinner rolls in half to create a top and bottom.
- Layer the bottom half with the sliced cheese. Top the cheese with the browned ground beef. Lastly, place on the top bun.
- Brush the top bun with butter then sprinkle the sesame seeds on top.
- Place in the oven and bake until the Big Mac sliders are toasted.
- Remove from oven then remove the top bun and add on the lettuce, pickles, onions and sauce. Now, they are ready to serve and separate.
Storage
When storing any leftovers, the Big Mac sliders will keep fine for up to 3 days when covered in the fridge. If you want to freeze them, I recommend removing the fresh ingredients before freezing. When ready to serve again, add new fresh ingredients.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Can Big Mac sliders be made ahead?
Yes, make the base of the cheese and the browned ground beef. Store them in the fridge until you’re ready to bake the sliders and add the fresh ingredients once you’re ready to serve.
Is it better to make the special sauce or buy it?
It’s easier to buy but better is debatable. You can control more with the ingredients at home and adjust the sauce to your personal liking.
What are the best dinner rolls for sliders?
The best will depend on the recipe. Hawaiian sweet rolls are used for this recipe but for a more authentic flavor I suggest plain dinner rolls or potato bread dinner rolls.
