Homemade Blue Cheese Dressing
I am a major health nut that happens to be a cook. Things that I loved I found they were best when they were homemade and fresh. I first created a ranch dressing from scratch and now a homemade blue cheese version.  If you’ve never had fresh dressing think of your favorite restaurant then go ask are their dressing made in house. I bet they are! So, when you do it yourself you’ll knock not only your socks off but your guest and family as well.

Is Blue Cheese Dressing Keto

Yes, it is as long as there is no added sugar. I searched and some people do add sugar to their recipes. Why? I have no idea but as Americans everything must be sweet. There are other taste such as bitter, sour and savory. But, this recipe should be a mix of tangy, bitter and savory in my opinion. The buttermilk gives it a bite that blends with the tangy, rich flavor of blue cheese. Then, you have the sour cream and mayo that lifts it all together for an unmatched freshness.

How To Make Homemade Blue Cheese Dressing

To start, find yourself some blue cheese. You can buy crumbles but sourcing a good quality blue cheese and crumbling it yourself only makes the quality of this recipe better.

In a mixing bowl combine sour cream and mayo. Give this two a good mixing. Then, add in salt and pepper.

Next, add in lemon juice and buttermilk. See notes below for buttermilk.

Lastly, add in your blue cheese crumbles. The last part is the longest but most important, waiting. Homemade dressing has to sit to allow the flavors to marinate together. Eating it as soon as you fix it won’t do the flavors any justice.

This is a great example of a recipe to make ahead!

Helpful Recipe Tips

  • How long does it last, luckily blue cheese dressing will last anywhere from 7-10 days. Due to it being homemade it doesn’t have a shelf life of months just a week or slightly more depending on how fresh the ingredients were when you started.
  • Blend blue cheese, I like to blend the dressing a little with the blue cheese crumbles. This makes even spreading across the dressing. Simply give a light blend to the blue cheese dressing with half the blue cheese then toss in the rest of that authentic texture.
  • For keto, if you are unsure about buttermilk you can swap for heavy cream. Buttermilk doesn’t add anymore than 2g net carbs for the entire recipe but whatever makes you comfortable.
  • Thick or thin, test the thickness you want by adding in the buttermilk last. This recipe is the perfect thickness to me but maybe you want it thicker and may only use half the buttermilk or you want it thinner and double the amount.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 2 tablespoon mayo
  • 1 ounce blue cheese crumbles
  • 2 tablespoon buttermilk (sub heavy cream for keto)
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  • Either use blue cheese crumbles or find a high quality blue cheese and crumble it yourself
  • In a mixing bowl combine sour cream and mayo
  • Add in lemon juice and blue cheese crumbles. See notes below before adding blue cheese
  • Slowly add buttermilk for desired thickness. 2 tablespoons is still a thick dressing so you are more likely to want to add more than take away.
  • Now salt and pepper to taste. Note, taste for saltiness because the blue cheese taste wont come out strongly until the dressing sits for a few hours up to a day. Homemade dressings are always better after sitting so flavors can marinate together.
