Making the ham salad recipe
- To start, you’ll need a food processor or blender. If you own neither you can chop up the ham yourself but be prepared to put those arm muscles in use.
- Now, in the food processor add in the chunks of hand. Give the processor a couple of pulses to mince the ham. Do not turn it into a puree unless that’s your style. You want to leave a few chunks in there for texture.
- On the side, mince ribs of celery and roughly chop boiled eggs.
- In a small bowl, add mayo, mustard, honey, black pepper and apple cider vinegar. You should not need to add any salt in this recipe due to the ingredients.
- In a large bowl, add in ham, chopped egg, minced celery and sweet relish. Then fold in the creamy dressing. Some people like to add all the ingredients into the food processor but I think it purees it a bit too much. Test it out and leave a comment on what you think.
- Serve this ham salad recipe on bread or serve as a dip with crackers.
How long will this ham salad keep in the refrigerator
Ham salad keeps great in the refrigerator for about 4-5 days depending on how fresh the ham was to start. The high salt in the ham helps a lot and adding the honey which is a natural preservative extends the life as well.
I have not tested freezing this recipe and I’m not sure how the mayo will be once you thaw it. Due to the stabilizers in the mayo is should be fine but I don’t want to tell you any false information.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
What are the main ingredients in ham salad?
A common them you will see in most salad recipes are mayo, mustard, celery and relish. These are the core ingredients in ham salad as well and additional ingredients will vary from recipe to recipe.
Can I freeze ham salad with mayonnaise?
I do not recommend freezing any salad. Vegetables that we buy frozen go through a process called flash freezing. Even then it changes the texture. Store bought mayo has stabilizers to keep it together on the shelf and in your refrigerator. When frozen some stabilizes become unstable again. If it’s 4 days in and you haven’t finished your ham salad I suggest tossing it away.

This ham salad recipe is best served in a sandwich or little sliders. Another option is to turn the ham salad into more of a dip that you serve with crackers.
