How To Make Crockpot Turkey Wings

Make a list of these ingredients

  • Turkey wings
  • Green bell pepper
  • Onion
  • Chicken broth
  • Seasoning mix (salt, black pepper, paprika, garlic powder, chili power, cayenne pepper, brown sugar)

Quick tips to make the turkey wings their best

  • When starting out the amount of liquid won’t seem like enough. But, after and hour or two when the ingredients heat up everything will release water and the turkey will release it’s juices. This will add to the liquid in the bottom.
  • Put the turkey wings on top of the vegetables. Because they are are crockpot turkey wings you can crowd them a little bit. But, putting the wings on top of the vegetables will allow the seasoning not to get washed off in the juice at the bottom.
  • Do not toss out the juice and veggies once the turkey wings are done. This is a flavorful gravy that can be used to add to all of your classic side dishes served with this recipe.
  • Cooking times will vary but this recipe should only take 4-5 hours to bring the turkey wings up to temp. If worried you are looking for 165F for turkey according to the USDA*.

  1. To start, whip together the seasoning mix. Then, pat the turkey wings dry.
  2. Next, generously season the turkey wings with the rub then set them to the side. You do not have to cut the drum and the flat unless you want to. This will not change anything if you do or don’t.
  3. After you have seasoned the turkey wings, with all the leftover seasoning add in the cornstarch.
  4. Now, if you haven’t sliced the onion and green bell pepper do it now. Take the slices and toss them in the seasoning miix with the cornstarch added.
  5. Grab your crockpot, turn the heat on high. This turkey wings will cook about 4-5 hours.
  6. Then, pour in the chicken broth in the bottom of the crockpot. Toss in all the coated onions and green bell peppers with the remains season. There will be some left so toss it in the water.
  7. Also, toss the sprigs of thyme in the water as well.
  8. Lastly, add the turkey wings directly on top of the sliced veggies. The areas that touch the liquid will have the seasoning washed away. But, thats not a problem because the seasoning will still work its way inside the wings as they cook.
  9. Before serving be sure to pull the stems from the thyme out of the crockpot.

Storing the leftovers

This is very simple. Just wrap the turkey wings up in aluminum foil or place them into an airtight container. This is a great recipe to be frozen as well and should last a few months in the freezer.

For the leftover gravy or juice simply store in a bowl or jar. You can even freeze it along with the turkey wings.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Is cooking turkey in a slow cooker safe?

Of course, the only thing to be concerned about it bring the meat up to temp*. This isn’t a problem in this crockpot turkey recipe because you can see the meat falling from the bone. I always check the temperature to be safe with my meat thermometer.

Do you have to cut the wings in half?

No you do not. The drum and tip are fine together and if you separated them this may change the time slightly but not by much. The flavors would be the exact same.

How do I thicken gravy in a crockpot?

There will be plenty of juices or drippings left in the bottom of the pot. This is the reason the cornstarch was added to help thicken this up to serve.

However, if you want even thicker gravy simple strain the drippings then in a pot make a cornstarch slurry in water and pour it in until the desired thickness is reached. Start out with 2 TB of cornstarch to 1/4 cup water.
