Cherry turnovers

Are you ready to try out in a classic dessert that is both perfectly flaky and bursting with sweet cherry goodness? Look no further these simple cherry turnovers. These pastries are a combination of a buttery, flaky pastry and cherry filling.

I’ll show you step by step how to make the perfect cherry turnovers. This is the most beginner way to make them because they are so easy.

How To Make Cherry Turnovers

Ingredients you’ll need

  • Store-bought puff pastry
  • Cherry filling
  • Egg
  • Heavy cream or milk

Quick tips before starting the recipe

  • Sometimes the filling can leak out. The best tip is to not overfill the pastry. It’s easy to see when it’s time to close them. Try to make sure the edges are neat and free of cherry filling so they seal properly. An extra step is to refrigerate them for 15 minutes after sealing to really lock that filling in.
  • For the optional glaze, I’ll add the measurements below in the recipe card. But, it’s optional and only 3 ingredients.

Making the cherry turnovers recipe

  1. Preheat the oven to 400F.
  2. Take the puff pastries and cut the sheets into 4’s. In a small bowl, mix together the egg and heavy cream, set aside.
  3. Now, with the canned cherries, take a spoon full of cherries and place in the middle on one puff pastry sheet. Take a finger, dip it into the egg wash and spread a thin layer around the edges. Fold the puff pastry over and seal it. Then, crimp the edges with a knife.
  4. Quick tip, try to get as many cherries as possible from the canned filling. Some brands give you more filling than actual cherries. After 1 or 2 turnovers, you’ll have a feel about how much you need to fill the turnovers correctly and seal them.
  5. Once all are sealed, brush the outside of the pastry with the egg wash. Then, place on a lined sheet pan and bake for 15-20 or when the outside is golden.
  6. Allow to cool for 10-15 minutes before handling. Spread the icing, then enjoy.
