Baked Beans With Ground Beef
Baked beans with ground beef is an easy one-pot dinner made with seasoned ground beef, baked beans, green bell peppers, onions, and a sweet and smoky barbecue sauce. Everything is baked together until thick, rich, and packed with flavor, making it a budget-friendly meal that’s perfect for busy weeknights.
While many baked bean recipes are served as a side dish at cookouts and potlucks, this version is hearty enough to stand on its own as a complete meal. The combination of ground beef, tender beans, and vegetables creates a filling dinner that feeds the whole family without requiring a long list of ingredients.
Whether you’re looking for an easy weeknight dinner, a recipe to feed a crowd, or a simple way to stretch a pound of ground beef, these baked beans with ground beef deliver big flavor with very little effort.
What Makes This Recipe Different?
Many baked beans with ground beef recipes are designed as side dishes for cookouts and backyard barbecues. This recipe is built differently. With a full pound of ground beef, baked beans, onions, and green bell peppers, it’s hearty enough to serve as a complete meal instead of just a side.
Another difference is the balance of flavors. The barbecue sauce, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, and mustard create a sweet, smoky, and savory sauce that thickens as the beans bake. Combined with the ground beef and vegetables, every bite has more flavor and texture than a basic can of baked beans.
The green peppers and onions also play a bigger role than they do in many similar recipes. As they cook, they soften and blend into the sauce, adding extra flavor while helping transform simple pantry ingredients into a filling family dinner.
Why You’ll Love It

- Budget-friendly family dinner: This recipe stretches a pound of ground beef into a hearty meal that’s perfect for feeding a family without spending a fortune.
- Sweet, smoky, and savory flavor: The combination of barbecue sauce, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, and mustard creates a rich sauce that coats every bite.
- Easy to prepare: Most of the work happens in one pot, and the oven does the rest while the flavors come together.
- Perfect for meal prep: Leftovers reheat well, making this a great option for lunches and easy dinners throughout the week.
- Great for more than just weeknights: While hearty enough for dinner, these baked beans with ground beef are also perfect for potlucks, cookouts, family gatherings, and game day parties.
Ingredient Tips
Ground Beef
Lean ground beef works well in this recipe because the baked beans already contain plenty of sauce. If using a higher-fat blend, be sure to drain any excess grease before adding the remaining ingredients.
Baked Beans
Canned baked beans make this recipe quick and easy while still delivering plenty of flavor. Most brands will work, but pork and beans are not a direct substitute since they have a thinner sauce and a different flavor profile.
Green Bell Pepper
Green bell peppers add texture and a subtle sweetness that balances the richness of the beans and ground beef. They’re also one of the ingredients that helps give this recipe its classic flavor.
Yellow Onion
Yellow onions soften as they bake and add another layer of savory flavor to the sauce. Combined with the peppers, they help turn a simple can of baked beans into a hearty meal.
Barbecue Sauce
Use a barbecue sauce you already enjoy because it contributes much of the smoky flavor in the finished dish. Sweet, smoky, or hickory-style sauces all work well.
Worcestershire Sauce and Mustard
These two ingredients may seem small, but they add depth and balance to the sauce. The Worcestershire brings savory flavor while the mustard helps cut through some of the sweetness from the brown sugar and baked beans.
Chef’s Tips
- Cook the onions and peppers until softened. They don’t need to be fully caramelized, but allowing them to soften before adding the beans helps develop more flavor throughout the dish.
- Don’t rush the baking time. The oven does more than heat the beans. It allows the sauce to thicken and gives the flavors time to blend together.
- Adjust the thickness to your preference. If you like thicker baked beans, leave them in the oven a little longer. The longer they bake, the more the sauce reduces and thickens.
- Use an oven-safe Dutch oven or deep skillet. Cooking everything in one pot makes cleanup easier and allows the flavors from the ground beef, peppers, and onions to stay in the dish.
- Taste before baking. Different brands of barbecue sauce and baked beans vary in sweetness. Give the mixture a quick taste before it goes into the oven and adjust if needed.
- Let the beans rest before serving. The sauce will continue to thicken slightly as the beans cool, making them easier to serve and even more flavorful.
- Make it your own. For extra flavor, try adding cooked bacon, jalapeños, or a dash of hot sauce to the mixture before baking.
How To Make Baked Beans With Ground Beef
Step 1: Preheat the oven
Preheat your oven to 350°F. While the oven heats, dice the onion and green bell pepper and gather the remaining ingredients.
Step 2: Brown the ground beef
Heat a Dutch oven or oven-safe pot over medium heat with a small amount of oil. Add the ground beef and cook until it is mostly browned.
Step 3: Cook the vegetables
Add the diced onion and green bell pepper to the ground beef. Season lightly with salt and black pepper, then continue cooking until the onions are translucent and the peppers have softened. If the mixture seems dry, add a little more oil as needed.
Step 4: Build the sauce
Reduce the heat to medium-low and stir in the baked beans, barbecue sauce, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, and mustard. Mix everything together until well combined.
Step 5: Bake until thick and bubbly
Transfer the pot to the preheated oven and bake for 1 hour. The sauce will slowly thicken as the beans cook and the flavors blend together.
Step 6: Stir and serve
Remove the baked beans from the oven and give everything a good stir. Allow the beans to cool slightly before serving.
Step 7: Adjust the thickness if needed
If you prefer thicker baked beans, return the pot to the oven for an additional 10 to 20 minutes. The longer the beans bake, the thicker and richer the sauce will become.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Can I make baked beans with ground beef ahead of time?
Yes. You can prepare the entire recipe up to 2 days in advance and store it in the refrigerator. Reheat in the oven or microwave until warmed through before serving.
Can I freeze baked beans with ground beef?
Absolutely. Allow the beans to cool completely, then transfer them to an airtight container and freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.
Why are my baked beans too thin?
The beans may simply need more time in the oven. As they bake, the sauce reduces and thickens. If the mixture seems too loose after an hour, continue baking in 10-minute increments until it reaches your desired consistency.
Can I use a different color bell pepper?
Yes. Red, orange, and yellow bell peppers all work well in this recipe. Green bell peppers are the traditional choice, but sweeter peppers can add a slightly different flavor.
Is this a side dish or a main dish?
It can be served as either. The ground beef, beans, onions, and peppers make it hearty enough for dinner, but it’s also a great option for potlucks, cookouts, and family gatherings.
Can I add bacon to baked beans with ground beef?
Yes. Cooked bacon is one of the most popular additions to baked beans. Stir chopped bacon into the mixture before baking or sprinkle crispy bacon on top before serving.
What can I serve with baked beans and ground beef?
Cornbread, coleslaw, potato salad, macaroni and cheese, and grilled vegetables all pair well with this recipe. It’s also filling enough to enjoy on its own as a complete meal.

Baked Beans With Ground Beef
Ingredients
- 1 pound lean ground beef
- 2 28 oz baked beans
- 1/2 medium yellow onion diced
- 1 medium green bell pepper diced
- 1 cup barbecue sauce
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 2 tablespoon worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon mustard
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350℉
- Before starting, prep all the ingredients because cooking on the stove top will move fast. Now, use a dutch oven or an oven safe pot on medium heat add a little oil. Then, toss in and cook the ground beef.
- Now, when the ground beef is almost done toss in diced onion and diced green bell pepper. Season everything lightly with salt and black pepper. Cook the onions until fragrant and translucent. If the mix looks dry be sure to add a little more oil since you are using lean beef.
- Next, lower the heat to medium and add in the cans of baked beans. Then, add in the remaining ingredients. Stir everything together.
- Place in preheated oven for an hour. Remove from oven and give everything a stir. Allow to cool before serving.
- Quick tip, the longer you leave the beans in the oven the thicker they get. If an hour isn't long enough due to oven temperature you can always add more time to adjust for the differences in ovens.
