How To Make Turkey Meatloaf
Ingredients needed
- Ground turkey
- Garlic
- Onion
- Grated carrots
- Dried thyme
- Worcestershire sauce
- Buttermilk
- Breadcrumbs
- Egg
- Salt & black pepper
- Ingredients for glaze (see below)
Important tips before starting the recipe
- You can toss almost anything in a meatloaf. It can be very personal which is great. However, I recommend not leaving out a few crucial ingredients. These are the breadcrumbs, buttermilk and the eggs. These are what bring the moisture and help the meatloaf hold itself together.
- Be sure to allow the meatloaf mix to sit before you begin shaping the meatloaf. The ingredients need time to work themselves together. When it’s time to shape the meatloaf you can do it without a loaf pan and it’ll stay together perfectly.

Making the the turkey meatloaf recipe
- To start, you’ll need to prep all the ingredients first. Before you make the meatloaf you need to cook the onion, carrots and garlic first. This will cause them to have a much better flavor in the final product. Simply toss the diced onion, grated carrots and minced garlic in a frying pan on medium high heat with a little oil and cook until they are all soft and fragrant.
- Now, once they are sit them to the side in a bowl or plate to allow them to cool. They won’t cool down if you leave them in a hot pan.
- Next, in a large bowl combine the ground turkey, cooked veggies, thyme, Worcestershire sauce, beaten eggs, buttermilk, breadcrumbs, salt and pepper. Give it a good mix then cover and let it sit while you make the glaze.
- Preheat the oven to 350F.
- For this glaze you do not need to heat it up. Mix everything in a bowl together and that’s it.
- Now, grab a sheet pan and shape the meatloaf directly in the middle. Everything should stay together without any issues.
- Use half the glaze on the meatloaf then place the meatloaf in the oven. Bake for 1 hour and 15 minutes, more or less. Due to ovens being different check the temperature of the meatloaf at the 1 hour make. A thermometer probe is perfect for this. You’ll want the internal temp to be at least 165F* when the turkey meat is done.
- Now, when the turkey is done remove from the oven and use the rest of the glaze while the meatloaf is still hot. Be careful and do not burn yourself.
- Lastly, allow the meatloaf to cool about 15-20 minutes before serving.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Why does my turkey meatloaf fall apart?
Binding is super important and give the meatloaf time to bind is important as well. The rest time before shaping the meatloaf is super important. Also adding too many ingredients into the meatloaf can throw this off as well not allowing everything to stick together.
Do you cook meatloaf at 350 or 375?
This is my second meatloaf recipe for this site and they are both cooked at 350F. This gives the inside time to cook but also low enough where the sugars don’t burn in the glaze during the cooking process.
