Honey Butter Swim Biscuits
These honey butter swim biscuits take classic butter swim biscuits in a sweeter direction. Made with honey, a touch of cinnamon, and baked in melted butter, they have a soft, fluffy center with golden buttery edges and just the right amount of sweetness.
Unlike savory butter swim biscuits that are served alongside dinner, these biscuits are perfect for breakfast, brunch, holiday mornings, or whenever you’re craving something sweet and comforting. The honey adds rich flavor throughout the biscuits while the cinnamon brings a subtle warmth that pairs perfectly with the buttery texture.
If you’re looking for an easy homemade biscuit recipe that feels a little special without requiring extra work, these honey butter swim biscuits are a great place to start.
What Makes This Recipe Different?
Unlike classic butter swim biscuits, this version adds honey and a touch of cinnamon for a sweeter flavor that’s perfect for breakfast and brunch.
The honey is mixed directly into the dough, giving each biscuit a subtle sweetness without making them overly sugary. Combined with melted butter and a hint of cinnamon, the result is a biscuit that feels somewhere between a traditional Southern biscuit and a comforting breakfast treat.
Another difference is how easy they are to make. There’s no rolling, folding, or biscuit cutting required. The dough is simply mixed, spread into a butter-filled baking dish, and baked until golden brown. The butter swim method creates soft, fluffy biscuits with crisp buttery edges every time.
If you enjoy sweet breakfast breads, cinnamon rolls, or biscuits with honey butter, this recipe delivers those same comforting flavors in a much simpler format.
Why You’ll Love It
- Perfect balance of sweet and buttery: The honey adds just enough sweetness while the melted butter keeps the biscuits rich and flavorful.
- Great for breakfast or brunch: These biscuits fit right in alongside eggs, bacon, sausage, and breakfast casseroles.
- No biscuit cutter required: The butter swim method skips the rolling and cutting, making homemade biscuits much easier.
- Soft centers with golden edges: Baking the dough in melted butter creates fluffy biscuits with lightly crisp, buttery edges.
- Easy enough for beginners: Even if you’ve never made homemade biscuits before, this recipe is simple and forgiving.
- A cozy twist on classic butter swim biscuits: The addition of honey and cinnamon gives these biscuits a warm, comforting flavor that’s perfect for holidays and weekend breakfasts.
Ingredient Tips
Flour: All-purpose flour gives these biscuits the best texture. It creates a soft, tender crumb while still providing enough structure for the butter swim method.
Honey: Use a honey you enjoy the flavor of since it plays a major role in the finished biscuits. Clover honey, wildflower honey, and local honey all work well.
Butter: Since the biscuits bake directly in melted butter, using a good-quality butter makes a noticeable difference in flavor. Salted or unsalted butter can be used depending on your preference.
Cinnamon: The cinnamon adds a subtle warmth rather than a strong spice flavor. If you’re not a fan of cinnamon, you can leave it out and still have delicious honey butter swim biscuits.
Buttermilk: Buttermilk helps create soft, fluffy biscuits while adding a slight tang that balances the sweetness of the honey. If needed, you can make a quick substitute with milk and lemon juice or vinegar.
Chef’s Tips
- Don’t overmix the dough: Stir just until the ingredients come together. Overmixing develops gluten and can make the biscuits dense instead of soft and fluffy.
- Watch the biscuits near the end of baking: Honey encourages browning, so these biscuits may turn golden a little faster than savory butter swim biscuit recipes.
- Score the dough before baking: Cutting the dough into squares before it goes into the oven helps the biscuits separate easily and allows butter to flow between each portion.
- Use room-temperature honey: If your honey has crystallized or become thick, warm it slightly before mixing it into the dough for easier incorporation.
- Let the biscuits cool before serving: Giving the biscuits 10 to 15 minutes to rest allows the butter to settle and makes them easier to slice and serve.
- Serve with extra honey if desired: For an even sweeter finish, drizzle a little honey over the warm biscuits just before serving.
How To Make
Step 1: Mix the dry ingredients
Preheat the oven to 450°F. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and cinnamon.
Step 2: Add the wet ingredients
Pour in the buttermilk and honey, then stir just until a dough forms. Be careful not to overmix or the biscuits can become dense.
Step 3: Melt the butter
Place the butter in a 9×9 baking dish and set it in the oven until fully melted. The hot butter helps create the signature golden edges that make butter swim biscuits so popular.
Step 4: Add and score the dough
Carefully remove the baking dish from the oven and spread the dough evenly over the melted butter. Using a knife, score the dough into 9 squares. This allows the butter to flow between each biscuit as they bake.
Step 5: Bake
Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the tops are golden brown and the center is fully cooked through. Because of the honey, these biscuits may brown faster than savory butter swim biscuit recipes.
Step 6: Brush with honey butter
Mix together the melted butter, honey, cinnamon, and salt for the topping. Brush it generously over the warm biscuits straight from the oven.
Step 7: Cool and serve
Allow the biscuits to cool for 10 to 15 minutes before serving. This gives the butter time to settle into the biscuits while keeping them soft and tender.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Can I leave out the cinnamon?
Yes. The cinnamon adds a subtle warmth to the biscuits, but it isn’t required for the recipe to work. If you prefer a pure honey butter flavor, simply omit it.
What type of honey works best?
Most varieties of honey work well in this recipe. Clover honey and wildflower honey are popular choices, but use your favorite since the honey flavor comes through in the finished biscuits.
Are these biscuits sweet?
They are lightly sweet, not dessert sweet. The honey adds flavor and sweetness without overpowering the buttery biscuit texture.
Can I make these ahead of time?
Yes. The biscuits can be baked a day ahead and stored in an airtight container. Reheat them in the oven before serving for the best texture.
Why are my biscuits browning so quickly?
Honey naturally caramelizes as it bakes, which can cause the tops to brown faster than savory butter swim biscuit recipes. If needed, loosely cover the dish with foil near the end of baking.
Can I freeze honey butter swim biscuits?
Yes. Allow the biscuits to cool completely, then freeze them in an airtight container for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight and reheat before serving.
Can I serve these for breakfast?
Absolutely. These biscuits were designed as a breakfast and brunch variation of classic butter swim biscuits. They pair well with eggs, bacon, sausage, breakfast casseroles, and fresh fruit.

- 8×8 baking dish
Ingredients

- 4 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- 2 cup buttermilk
- 1/4 cup honey
- 8 tablespoon butter melted
Honey butter topping
- 2 tablespoon butter melted
- 1 tablespoon honey
- 1/8 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/8 teaspoon salt
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 450℉.
- In a bowl, mix together the flour, salt, cinnamon, and baking powder. Then, add in the buttermilk, honey and stir until everything is combined.
- Place the baking dish in the oven with the 8 TB of butter and allow to melt. This also preheats the baking dish to help with the crispy edges.
- Once the butter is melted, remove the dish then add in the biscuits mix. Carefully spread it out in the baking dish then using a knife, score the biscuits into 9 squares 3×3.
- Place the dish back into the oven and bake for 20-25 minutes. The biscuits are done when the tops are golden but you'll have more browning with these due to the honey.
- When done baking, remove from the oven. Brush the top of the biscuits with the honey butter topping, then allow to cool 10-15 minutes before serving
