Hamburger mac and cheese is a creamy, easy dinner when you’re short on time. Better than hamburger helper and as easy to make.
Weeknight dinners should be easy and taste good enough for the family to leave little leftovers.
Everyone knows hamburger helper is easy to make but a homemade version packs a ton of more flavors and is just as easy. I whipped this hamburger mac and cheese recipe together in about 40 minutes.
I was able to serve up a hamburger mac and cheese recipe with a cheesy sauce that was gone in no time.
How To Make Hamburger Mac And Cheese
Ingredients needed

- Evaporated milk
- Cheddar cheese
- Onion
- Garlic
- Milk
- Salt & black pepper
Helpful tip for the recipe
Overall this recipe is very easy. My only word of caution is to use cheese that you grated yourself. You can even chop the cheese into cubes if you don’t have a greater. I recommend you do not use pre-shredded cheese for this recipe due to the non-caking agent. It will disrupt the creamy texture in the recipe.
With the milk I suggest whole milk for maximum flavor but if you choose to use any other milk it won’t make a difference outside of taste.
Making the hamburger mac and cheese
- You will need to make the macaroni separately. To speed things up you can even make the macaroni at the same time. Simply prepare the noodles according to the directions on the package.
- In a large pot on medium high heat add a little oil then brown the hamburger.
- Once the hamburger is almost fully cooked toss in the onions and garlic. Season everything lightly with salt and black pepper. Continue cooking a few more minutes until the onions and the garlic have become fragrant.
- Lower the heat to medium and pour in the milk and evaporated milk. Then, add in the velveeta cheese and sharp cheddar cheese.
- Allow the milk to heat up to a light simmer in order to melt the cheeses. Once you see a few bubbles in the milk and it’s steaming you can turn off the heat. You do not want to curdle the milk by allowing it to boil.
- Now, once the cheese have melted you can add in your drained, cooked macaroni and mix everything. You will need to season with salt and black pepper after. Season to taste and serve.
