Easily make hamburger cabbage casserole this way
- Preheat the oven to 350F. Then, prep all of your ingredients. Slice up the cabbage and dice the onion. Quick tip, chop the cabbage up small enough so that it is easy to stir into the casserole. You’ll be adding it into the oven raw.
- Now, brown the ground beef and at the end toss in the onion and allow it to cook a little while the ground beef is finishing.
- Combine the can of crushed tomatoes with beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, packet of onion soup mix and Italian seasoning.
- In the baking dish, add in the cooked ground beef and onion, cabbage and dry rice. Pour the tomato mix you just made across and stir everything together. It doesn’t have to be perfect but you want everything covered. Then, cover the baking dish and place in the oven for 1 hour.
- At one hour carefully remove the foil then give the casserole a stir. Replace the foil and cook the for more 30 minutes covered. This step is crucial for the rice and cabbage to cook properly.
- While that is cooking make the glazed topping and stir together the breadcrumbs and butter.
- Now at an hour and half, remove the foil. Give the casserole one more stir then add on the tomato glaze then spread the breadcrumbs across the top. Place baking in oven uncovered for a final 20 minutes or until breadcrumbs have browned.
- Allow the casserole to cool then serve and enjoy.
Storing the recipe
This hamburger cabbage casserole will keep for about 3-4 day covered in the refrigerator. You can break it down and freeze it as well but note there may be a slightly different texture in the cabbage. However, the flavor will stay the same.
