Quick tips before starting

  • In the recipe, I used garlic powder. This is for ease. If you have some cloves of garlic laying around I highly suggest using those instead.
  • I suggest adding the bacon at the end instead of cooking it with the baked beans. This will allow you to have the crunchy texture of the bacon when serving. If you bake it with the Dr Pepper baked beans the bacon will become soggy.

Reheating and storing the recipe

You can store the Dr Pepper baked beans in the pot you cooked it in with the lid on. Or transfer to an airtight container. The recipe will keep 3-4 days in the refrigerator. This is also a great recipe to freeze for later.

For reheating, if you have the same pot simply add the contents back in and bake at 350F until everything is heated through.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can I make this recipe in a slow cooker or crockpot?

Yes you can! I would still recommend cooking the onions beforehand or sub them out for onion powder. The method would still be the same, pour everything in and cook them until they are ready.

My sauce isn’t thick what happened?

Mentioned about if you pull the beans out at 1 hour they are cooked but the sauce is still a bit soupy. Leaving the beans in longer will help everything get nice and thick from the sugars in the sauce.

Does it taste like Dr Pepper because I hated the store bought beans?

The taste of Dr Pepper is very light. However, you’d know if it wasn’t in there.

Ingredients

  • 2 28 ounce baked beans
  • 12 ounces Dr Pepper
  • 1/4 cup molasses
  • 1/2 cup barbecue sauce
  • 1 tablespoon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder (sub with 3 minced cloves)
  • salt & black pepper
  • 1 medium yellow onion (diced)
  • 8 pieces bacon (chopped)

Instructions

  • First, dice an onion and preheat the oven to 350F. Then, grab a pot and turn the heat to medium high. Add a little oil to the pot and sauté the diced onion.
  • Next, add salt, garlic powder and black pepper to the onions. Then, turn the heat off. You only needed to cook the onions slightly before starting the recipe.
  • Now, add in both cans of baked beans.
  • Next, add in molasses, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, barbecue sauce and pour in the Dr pepper soda.
  • Give everything a good mix. Then, put the lid on the pot and bake for 1.5 hours. Note, you can remove from oven at 1 hour but in my testing that extra hour helped the sauce thicken a bit more.
  • Lastly, allow to cool a bit. Then taste for salt and before serving add in the chopped bacon.
  • Note: cook the bacon in the oven before you bake the beans or cook the bacon on the stove top while the beans are baking
