How To Make Air Fryer Chicken Cordon Bleu

Ingredients needed

  • Chicken breast
  • Italian breadcrumbs
  • Japanese breadcrumbs
  • Sliced Swiss cheese
  • Deli ham
  • Mayonnaise
  • Yellow mustard

Important tips before starting the recipe

  • This recipes uses two types of breadcrumbs. I like the Japanese breadcrumbs because the crunch is great on them. However, you’ll get more coverage of the whole chicken with the Italian breadcrumbs. If you do not want to use both I strongly recommend using only the Italian breadcrumbs instead.
  • When picking out the chicken breast, go for the larger ones. You’ll need to split the breast, flatten it then roll it. The larger the breast you’ll have more to work with.
  • I’ll add this in the notes but be sure to have toothpicks to use. With the air fryer, you’ll need to flip the chicken and if the underside is not secured the chicken will come open in the air fryer. Ask me how I know?
  • There’s a step in the recipe where there is plastic wrap used to wrap the chicken. This helps the chicken form to the shape before cooking and after doing this step you’ll see why. The chicken will be much more secured into the proper form. However, toothpicks are still recommended.

Making the chicken cordon bleu in the air fryer

  1. First, remove the chicken breast from the package and carefully butterfly the chicken. Here is a video reference for help.
  2. Place a piece of plastic wrap over the chicken that’s been butterfly and use a meat tenderizer or rolling pin and flatten the chicken out until it has spread thinner.
  3. Next, take a slice of ham and lay it over the chicken then top with a slice of Swiss cheese. Grab a piece of plastic wrap and lay the chicken on top. Roll the chicken closed tightly then wrap the plastic around the chicken tightly as well. Place the wrapped chicken in the fridge for an hour or even better until the next day. Here’s a video showing how to roll the chicken but without the plastic. See tips for why to use plastic.
  4. This will be the perfect time to make the sauce for the chicken cordon bleu.
  5. When ready to cook, set up a station for breading and an egg wash. Remove the chicken from the plastic wrap and you’ll notice it holds it’s shape well. Roll the chicken in the egg wash then the breadcrumbs. Set the breaded chicken on a plate for 10-15 minutes after they are all done.
  6. Preheat the air fryer to 375F.
  7. Add toothpicks on the sealed side of the chicken for extra security. Place the chicken in the air air fryer.
  8. Cook for 18 minutes and flip the chicken halfway through. Allow to rest 5 minutes when finished then slice and enjoy.
