What are the best strawberries to use, why I use these…
It’s normal ask to can you use fresh or even frozen strawberries. The answer is yes but I do not recommend it. We are use to a certain flavor that’s produced when eating fruit filled items so much that fresh items can be disappointing. Especially when they aren’t that sweet.
What I’ve found is freeze dried strawberries have a much more concentrated flavor and give a great strawberry flavor that isn’t artificial. Simply because they are real strawberries. I recommend the bits or you can add them to a food processor to break them up if you can only find the halved strawberries in the store.
The secret to the crispiest strawberries
A hot waffles iron. Most come with an option for heat settings but crank that bad box to the max. One problem is when waffles come out crispy they will get soggy as they sit. To prevent this sit them on a wire rack. When placed on a plate the steam softens them.
Making the strawberry waffles recipe
- Turn the waffles iron on high and allow it to heat while you prepare the waffles batter.
- In a large bowl combine the eggs, slowly pour in the butter while whisking then add in the milk and vanilla extract. In another bowl combine the flour, sugar, baking powder and the salt. Mix together the dry and wet ingredients. Lastly, fold in the bits of freeze dried strawberries.
- Add the batter to the waffles iron and cook until golden and crispy. Remove from the waffle iron and serve immediately.
- Top with fresh strawberries and your choice of syrup or even butter with a powdered sugar topping.
