How To Make Smashed Sweet Potatoes

Ingredients needed

  • Sweet Potatoes
  • Cinnamon
  • Brown sugar
  • Salt

Important tips before starting the recipe

  • When picking out the potatoes, choose the sweet potatoes that have long look to them. Some can be almost round but you want the longer, skinny shaped ones for this recipe.
  • With smashed sweet potatoes, understand that sweet potatoes and other potatoes are very different due to the fiber and sugar content in sweet potatoes. When you are actual smashing the potato do not smash them a lot. They are super fragile and only a small press so they spread a little is needed.
  • Do not over boil the potatoes. You want them to still be a bit firm for smashing. Over boiling them and they will stick and fall apart when you go to press them. A sweet spot for the potatoes are softened but still firm enough to allow you to cut the potato with a knife. In all honesty, I would not say this is an easy recipe to make. It does require some cooking skill and knowledge around the kitchen.

Other options to top the smashed sweet potatoes

  • Mini marshmallows
  • Garlic
  • Rosemary or thyme
  • Butter with herbs of choice
  • Nuts such as pecans or walnuts

Making the smashed sweet potatoes then topping them

  1. In a large pot water, add sweet potatoes then bring to a boil. You’ll want to boil the potatoes until you can pierce them with a knife and you can feel the resistance that the potatoes are not quite done. This is the perfect point to remove them for the water so that you can cut and smash them with ease.
  2. Next, allow them to cool so that you can easily handle them for cutting.
  3. Preheat the oven to 400F.
  4. Once cool, cut into slices about two inches thick. Then, place them on the baking baking sheet you are going to use. Now, with the back of a plate or small bowl add or spray oil for easy release. Gently on each potato press then down slightly and go to each sweet potato and repeat. If the bowl or plate starts to stick reapply the oil.
  5. Now, season the potatoes with salt, sprinkle brown sugar and cinnamon across the top. This will have to be to taste because it’s impossible to know exact measurements do to many factors.
  6. Place the smashed sweet potatoes back in the oven for 15-20 minutes. Remove them and allow to cool a bit before serving.
