How To Make Hamburger Steak With Onion Gravy
Ingredients needed
- Ground beef
- Egg
- Beef broth
- Milk
- All-purpose flour
- Onion
- Beef bouillon cube
- Worcestershire sauce
- Seasonings (listed below)
Helpful tips before starting the recipe
- When switching from the high heat of cooking to hamburgers to the gravy, allow the pan to cool a bit. The gravy has a mix of milk in it and too much heat can make the milk curdle. This doesn’t change the taste but the texture will be horrible and gritty.
- If you have time, allow the mixed ground beef to sit for a while. Make make it that morning then return home and cook for dinner or later in the evening on a Sunday. This will give the ground beef time to really work in those seasonings into the meat.
- In the photos the onions are sliced. But, for the recipe I recommend dicing the onions. They are easily moved around in the pan and mixed with the flour.
- Instead of the beef bouillon cube you can sub for an onion soup mix packet.

Making the hamburger steak with onion gravy recipe
- First, mix the ground beef with the seasonings and dice the onions. Then, form the patties or the hamburger steaks. The sizes can and will vary but don’t make them so big they take forever to cook all the way through.
- Prep the other ingredients for the onion gravy as well.
- In a frying pan on medium high heat add a little oil the cook the hamburger steaks until fully cooked. Then, remove from the pan and set hamburger to the side.
- Now, toss in the diced onion into the pan. Cook the onions until they start to brown a little. When the onions are almost done lower the heat to medium.
- If the pan looks dry you can toss in a tablespoon or two of butter. Next, sprinkle the flour over the onions then mix around until things start to bubble a little.
- Then, pour in the broth, milk and crumble the bouillon cube over the gravy. Mix everything up until well combined.
- Lower the heat to medium low and add the patties back in. Baste the hamburger steak with the gravy and allow them to sit in the gravy carefully simmering for 5 minutes then turn the stove off.
- Allow to cool a bit before serving and enjoy.
