Philly Cheesesteak Casserole

A Philly cheesesteak casserole is the full flavor of a cheesesteak in a casserole dish that’s loaded with cheese, bell peppers and onion. It’s a great low carb and keto friendly version of the classic American sandwich.

Philly Cheesesteak Casserole

One thing I do miss is a fatty Philly cheesesteak. Starting keto, I came to find out that the only issue was the bread. Although the bread is essential it isn’t where all the flavor is. Now, for those wanting keto bread I have a recipe and included is a list of places you can buy bread as well. Not keto, just add 1 cup of broth along with pasta and you’re good to go. I will add more info in the notes for a non keto recipe.

What Meat Is Used For A Philly Cheesesteak

In this recipe I use ground beef. But, using thinly sliced steak is a great sub in a Philly cheesesteak casserole. It’s actually more authentic that way. Typically, you are going to have thinly slice ribeye steak in a sandwich, a real one that is. Not that steak um stuff. Any thinly sliced steak will work just fine. If using thinly sliced steak you will need to use less of the cream sauce.

What Cheese Goes On Philly Cheesesteak

This is very debatable. I have seen cheddar, American white and yellow, provolone and mozzarella. In my personal opinion after having many different versions is white American or provolone. In the Philly cheesesteak casserole recipe I use a mix of white American then top the casserole off with freshly grated provolone.

Best Filling To Use

A cheesesteak is like a pizza. What’s your favorite topping? You can add in things like mushrooms, tomatoes, peppers and even as far as lettuce. I keep the basics in the casserole because I feel certain flavors give it the best taste. Although, the flavor of mushrooms are great in a cheesesteak I personally didn’t include them.

How To Make Philly Cheesesteak Casserole

To start, slice and dice the bell peppers and onions. You’ll want to use a lean ground beef in this recipe. Now, of course you want the fat but a higher fat ground beef will result in far too much. I suggest 93/7 lean ground beef.

Next, on the stove top cook the ground beef and season it. Remove from the pan then add in bell peppers and onions. Season these with salt and pepper as well. Then, remove when soft and fragrant.

Now, melt together cream cheese and mayo. In the casserole dish, add in cooked ground beef, bell peppers, onions and cheese sauce. Then, add in 1/2 cup of white American cheese. Mix everything together. Lastly, top off with shredded provolone cheese.

Bake in preheated oven for 20 minutes or until cheese melts and browns to your liking. Allow to cool then serve!

Helpful Recipe Tips

  • How do I add noodles? If you’d like to use noodles here are your instructions. Boil the noodles first, then drain them. Make all other ingredients the same as in the instructions in the recipe for the exception of the cream sauce. In the cream sauce, add 1 cup of beef broth. This will thin it out some to make room for the noodles. Then, continue to bake the recipe as stated.
  • Where to find cheeses, I could not find white American or provolone in block form in my grocery store. My secret, I went to the deli section. There you can choose a higher quality white American cheese other than Kraft. To add, they have great provolones there. Simply ask for about half a pound from the block. They will cut it so that you can go home and shred it for yourself.
  • Adding ingredients and subbing, you can sub or add any ingredients you’d like. As mentioned, I love mushrooms but I just didn’t add them here. For instructions on adding sliced steak I will include them as well.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound 93/7 lean ground beef
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1 diced medium onion
  • 1/2 diced green bell pepper
  • 1/2 diced red bell pepper

Cheese sauce

  • 4 ounce full fat cream cheese
  • 1/2 cup mayo
  • 1/2 cup shredded white American cheese

Topping

  • 1/2 cup shredded provolone cheese

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 400°F, dice bell peppers, onions and shredded cheeses.
  • In a pan on high heat sauté ground beef until brown. Be sure to season the ground beef with all the spices. You may have to add a little fat to help it cook since it's so lean. Beef tallow would be the best here.
  • Remove from pan, then add in bell peppers and onions. Salt and pepper them and cook until tender. Once done, turn off heat and add the ground beef back in. Mix them together then allow them to sit while you make cream sauce.
  • Combine cream cheese and mayo. You may have to add some heat so that they come together such as a small pan or microwave.
  • Add seasoned ground beef, bell peppers, onions, cream sauce and 1/2 cup shredded white American cheese into a 8×8 casserole dish.
  • Top off with the shredded provolone. Place in oven for 20 minutes until cheese is melted and browned to your liking. Remove and allow to cool.
