Oven Baked Hamburgers

Oven Baked Hamburgers are one of the best ways to make juicy, flavorful burgers without ever firing up the grill. Whether it’s too cold to cook outside, you’re feeding a crowd, or you simply want an easier cleanup, baking burgers in the oven delivers tender, perfectly cooked patties every time.

This recipe uses simple seasonings, a touch of Worcestershire sauce for extra flavor, and one of my favorite finishing tricks: wrapping the burgers in foil for a few minutes after baking. It gently steams the buns, melts the cheese perfectly, and brings everything together into one incredibly satisfying burger.

What Makes This Recipe Different?

Most oven baked hamburger recipes focus on getting the burgers cooked. This recipe focuses on making them taste like burgers you’d actually crave.

The patties are seasoned simply with Worcestershire sauce and everyday spices, then baked until juicy and tender. But my favorite part comes after they’re finished cooking. Instead of serving them immediately, I place the burgers on the buns, add the cheese, wrap each one in aluminum foil, and return them to the oven for a few minutes. The steam softens the bun, melts the cheese, and brings everything together into one incredibly satisfying burger.

It’s a simple step that takes only a few extra minutes, but it transforms homemade oven baked hamburgers into something that feels like it came from your favorite burger spot.

Why You’ll Love It

No grill required. Make juicy, flavorful hamburgers right in your oven any time of the year, regardless of the weather.

Perfect for feeding a crowd. Baking burgers on a sheet pan makes it easy to cook several at once without standing over the stove or grill.

Simple pantry ingredients. Ground beef, a few seasonings, and Worcestershire sauce are all you need to make delicious homemade burgers.

Juicy every time. Baking at a high temperature helps keep the burgers tender while creating beautifully browned edges.

The foil trick is a game changer. Wrapping the finished burgers in foil for a few minutes melts the cheese, softens the bun, and creates that warm, wrapped burger experience that’s hard to beat.

Easy to customize. Add your favorite cheese, toppings, and sauces to create the perfect burger for everyone at the table.

Ingredient Tips

Ground beef: I recommend 85/15 ground beef because it has enough fat to stay juicy without becoming overly greasy. Leaner ground beef will work, but the burgers won’t be quite as flavorful.

Worcestershire sauce: This simple ingredient adds a deeper, savory flavor that makes the burgers taste like they’ve been cooking on the grill.

Seasonings: Salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder are all you need. They enhance the flavor of the beef without overpowering it.

Burger buns: Use a soft bakery-style bun or your favorite hamburger buns. Wrapping the finished burgers in foil helps soften the buns even more while the cheese melts.

Cheese: American, cheddar, pepper jack, Swiss, or provolone all melt beautifully. Add a slice before wrapping the burgers so it has time to melt over the patty.

Your favorite toppings: Finish the burgers with classics like lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, ketchup, mustard, or mayonnaise, or customize them with your favorite burger toppings.

Chef’s Tips

Don’t overwork the beef. Mix the ground beef and seasonings just until combined. Overmixing can make the burgers dense instead of tender.

Let the meat rest before baking. If you have an extra 20–30 minutes, let the seasoned beef rest in the refrigerator before forming the patties. This gives the Worcestershire sauce and seasonings a little more time to flavor the meat.

Make the patties slightly larger than the buns. Burgers shrink as they cook, so forming them a little wider than your buns helps them stay the perfect size.

Use a wire rack if you have one. Baking the burgers on an oven-safe wire rack set over a sheet pan allows the hot air to circulate around the patties for more even cooking. If you don’t have one, a regular baking sheet works just fine—just flip the burgers halfway through cooking.

Cook to temperature, not just time. Cooking time will vary depending on the thickness of your burgers. For the juiciest results, use an instant-read thermometer and cook to your preferred level of doneness.

Don’t skip the foil wrap. After assembling the burgers, wrap them in aluminum foil and return them to the oven for a few minutes. The cheese melts perfectly, the buns become incredibly soft, and the flavors come together in a way that’s reminiscent of your favorite burger restaurant.

How To Make Oven Baked Hamburgers

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F. If using a wire rack, place it on top of a rimmed baking sheet and lightly grease it to help prevent sticking.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, Worcestershire sauce, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. Mix just until the seasonings are evenly distributed, being careful not to overwork the meat.
  3. If time allows, cover the seasoned beef and let it rest in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes. This optional step gives the seasonings time to flavor the meat.
  4. Divide the beef into 4 equal portions and gently shape them into patties slightly larger than your hamburger buns. They’ll shrink as they cook.
  5. Arrange the patties on the prepared baking sheet or wire rack. If using a baking sheet without a rack, flip the burgers halfway through cooking for more even browning.
  6. Bake for 15–20 minutes, or until the burgers reach your preferred level of doneness. An instant-read thermometer is the best way to check for accuracy.
  7. Place each burger on a bun, add a slice of cheese if desired, then wrap each burger tightly in aluminum foil. Return them to the oven for 3–5 minutes to melt the cheese and soften the buns.
  8. Unwrap the burgers, add your favorite toppings, and serve immediately.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What temperature should hamburgers be baked in the oven?

I recommend baking hamburgers at 400°F. This higher temperature helps the outside brown while keeping the inside juicy and tender.

How long do hamburgers take to cook in the oven?

Most 1/4-pound burger patties take 15–20 minutes at 400°F. The exact cooking time will vary depending on the thickness of your patties, so using an instant-read thermometer is the most accurate way to check for doneness.

Should I bake burgers on a wire rack or a baking sheet?

A wire rack placed over a baking sheet is my preferred method because it allows hot air to circulate around the burgers for more even cooking. If you only have a baking sheet, it works perfectly too—just flip the burgers halfway through baking.

Do I need to flip burgers in the oven?

Only if you’re baking them directly on a sheet pan. If you’re using a wire rack, the hot air circulates around the patties, so flipping isn’t necessary.

What ground beef is best for oven baked hamburgers?

I recommend 85/15 ground beef because it has enough fat to stay juicy while still holding its shape. Leaner ground beef can be used, but the burgers won’t be quite as tender or flavorful.

Can I add cheese while the burgers are still hot?

Yes! Place a slice of cheese on each burger after baking, then wrap the burgers in foil and return them to the oven for a few minutes. The cheese melts perfectly while the buns become soft and warm.

Can I make these burgers ahead of time?

Absolutely. Cook the burgers as directed, allow them to cool, and refrigerate them for up to 4 days. Reheat them in the oven or microwave, then assemble them with fresh buns and your favorite toppings before serving. I recommend waiting to wrap the burgers in foil until you’re ready to serve them so the buns stay as fresh and soft as possible.
