Crockpot sausage and potatoes is a delicious slow cooker recipe with juicy sausage and cheesy, creamy potatoes. There are only 4 ingredients so they are easy to put together in the slow cooker and then it cooks itself.
Recipe Highlights
- How they taste: Crockpot sausage and potatoes have a cheesy base with smoked sausage. The cheese sauce and the smoked sausage are the stars here. If you choose diced potatoes with peppers and onions (I recommend it) the onions and peppers will add a nice touch of sweet veggies to the mix. Due to a review, I want to add that the potatoes are not crispy and if you over cook them they’ll loose all texture. It’s impossible to create crispy potatoes in this recipe.
- Skill level: Anyone can make this recipe. All the ingredients are tossed in the crockpot and left to cook on their own. The ingredients are all already cooked, you are basically heating them up and allowing the flavors to meld together.
- Storing: The crockpot sausage and potatoes will keep in the fridge for 2-3 days and it will freeze just fine. After thawing due to the cream of chicken soup and that the potatoes were frozen from the start, the textures will remain the same and as before.
Ingredient tips
- Sausage: This recipe is super flexible, choose any sausage you enjoy. The more flavorful the sausage the better because the cheese and the sausage are the main flavors in the recipe. I have not tried ground sausage with the recipe but I can’t see why that would be a problem.
- Potatoes: In the recipe I used frozen diced potatoes for ease. Also, I recommend the frozen diced potatoes with peppers and onions for more flavor. Can you use fresh potatoes? Absolutely but you’ll need to make sure they are done before serving the recipe and that will effect cooking time. Honestly, for texture freshly diced potatoes are best because you don’t have to worry about mushy potatoes and that can easily happen with frozen potatoes. But when pressed for time, frozen will do!
- Cheese: Freshly grated cheese for this recipe for the best melt or sub with Velveeta. Pre-shredded cheese can make the recipe gritty and lend to a undesirable texture when serving.
Serving suggestions
Crockpot sausage and potatoes can be served as a whole meal but it’s more of a side dish with meat. It’ll pair well with main dishes such as sliders, meatballs, chicken. A side of bread can also really shine here with a simple recipe such as butter swim biscuits or a cheddar bay style biscuit.

Crockpot Sausage And Potatoes
Ingredients
- 1 package smoked sausage
- 32 ounce potatoes (bag of frozen diced potatoes thawed)
- 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese (shredded)
- 10 ounce cream of chicken
Instructions
- Before starting, allow the frozen potatoes to thaw. An easy way is to leave the package in the refrigerator overnight.
- Now, slice the smoked sausage up. Add them to the crockpot along with the thawed potatoes.
- Then, mix in the can of creamed chicken. It will seem like there isn't enough but once the potatoes cook down a little everything will be perfect like the photos.
- Now, add the lid to the crockpot and cook on high for 3 hours. You can cook on low but this isn't the best recipe for that because the ingredients are technically already cooked.
- After 3 hours add the shredded cheese and allow an extra 30 minutes for the cheese to melt.
- Lastly, give the crockpot sausage and potatoes one last stir and serve. Taste for salt.
