How To Make Smothered Turkey Wings

Ingredients needed

  • Turkey wings
  • Green bell pepper
  • Celery
  • Chicken broth
  • Onion
  • Seasonings (listed below)

Helpful tip before starting the recipe

  • If you own a dutch oven or something similar that is great for making this a one pot meal. You can bake the turkey wings then pull them out and make the gravy all using the same pot. If you do not, using a roasting pan can work just as well for the baking process. You’ll just need to add another dish for the stove top.

Making the smothered turkey wings recipe

  1. First, mix all the seasoning ingredients together and chop up the veggies. Preheat the oven to 300F.
  2. Using the seasoning, season the turkey wings with the mix. You can pack in on heavy because some will fall off in the cooking process.
  3. Place the turkey wings in a roasting pan or in the dutch oven and bake for 60 minutes. In the dutch oven it is alright to stack them.
  4. When the 60 minutes up use the dripping and carefully transfer them to a sauce pan to prepare the gravy. If using a dutch oven just remove the turkey wings and place the pot on top of the stove. Note, if there isn’t enough drippings add oil because some turkey wings can be dry.
  5. Bring drippings to a medium high heat and add in the chopped onion, bell pepper and celery. Cook these until they have softened a little and the onions are translucent. Lower the heat to medium and toss flour on top of the cooked veggies.
  6. Next, mix the flour within the veggies. The pan should look very dry, this is also why you lower the heat to avoid burning. Now, slowly pour in chicken broth making sure the flour is mixing with the broth to avoid lumps.
  7. Then, toss in a bouillon cube and allow the mix to simmer long enough to melt the cube.
  8. Now, if using a dutch oven add the turkey wings back in and cover with the lid. Place the dutch oven in the oven and allow the wings to simmer for 60 minutes. If using a roasting pan, carefully pour the gravy over the turkey wings then cover the roasting pan with foil, bake 60 minutes.
  9. After the time is up remove the smothered turkey wings and allow them to cool before serving.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Are turkey wings suppose to be tough?

Turkey wings are very lean like chicken breast but with more fat. Cooking super fast or at a high heat allows the tenders to tighten causing the meat to be tough. The meat can still become tender but there is a very noticeable pull when biting. Low and slow with a bunch of liquid is the way to go which is why crockpot turkey wings are so popular.

Can I freeze the leftovers?

This recipe will freeze just fine. You can keep the smothered turkey wings in the refrigerator for up to 4 days when stored properly.

My seasoning washed off when I added the gravy?

This may happen which is why I recommend heavy seasoning. Baking the wings first helps the seasoning stick but when smothered some will fall off into the gravy. This is fine because the wings will still soak up the flavors within the gravy.
