Getting your cruciferous vegetables can be a pain. Especially if you don’t know how to prepare them correctly. They can be very bland and lacking in flavor. Sometimes I mix them in with my meats such as a chicken and broccoli.
Cherry tomatoes help bring a sweetness to the cabbage and bacon. The red wine vinegar accents with a tangy. Pretty much a bowl or plate of flavor with this cabbage and bacon recipe.
Are cabbage keto friendly
Very! As mentioned a few paragraphs ago cabbage is a cruciferous vegetable. Cabbage isn’t as high in fiber as in broccoli but it does provide more nutrition than lettuce. But those are simple the main reason cabbage is keto friendly is because it’s very low in carbohydrates.
Ingredients needed to make cabbage and bacon
- Head of cabbage
- Cherry tomatoes
- Red wine vinegar
- Uncured bacon
- Olive oil
- Salt and pepper
Making a fried cabbage recipe
- Cut cabbage into shreds, cut bacon up, slice garlic and cut tomatoes in half.
- In a pan on medium high heat add cut up bacon. Once fat starts to release add in tomatoes and garlic.
- When bacon is almost finished toss in red wine vinegar. Mix in with your bacon, tomatoes and garlic as it reduces quickly. Be sure to not leave it unattended.
- Toss in shredded cabbage, olive oil, salt and pepper. Continue cooking for another 3-5 minutes depending on how you choose to prepare your cabbage beforehand.
Helpful recipe tips
- Steam cabbage before frying in pan. This will remove the majority of the excess water from the cabbage. Trust me you will thank me later.
- Add extra oil where needed. Depending on how much fat you bacon releases you may need to add more olive oil. Don’t allow your cabbage to get so dry in the pan it will begin to burn. Most of the bacon fat will be absorbed by the cabbage.
- Watch salt content of bacon. Some bacon brands are saltier than others. I used Penderson’s brand which isn’t very salty. You don’t want to over salt your cabbage.

Keto Red Wine Cabbage and Bacon
- 1 head cabbage
- 10-20 whole cherry tomatoes
- 6 cloves garlic
- 4 strips bacon
- 3 tablespoon red wine vinegar
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 teaspoon Salt
- 1 teaspoon coarse ground black pepper (use half the amount if using fine texture black pepper)

- In a pan on medium high heat add cut up bacon, once fat starts to release add in tomatoes and garlic
- Cook until bacon is crisp plus garlic and tomatoes are nicely colored. That won't be an issue by the time the bacon finishes
- When bacon is almost finish toss in red wine vinegar. Mix in with your bacon, tomatoes and garlic
- toss in shredded cabbage, olive oil, salt and pepper. Continue cooking for another 3-5 minutes depending on how you choose to prepare your cabbage.
- Remove from heat and serve
Two ways to prepare cabbage
- Steam- This is my preferred way. It releases most of the water and allows the cabbage to already be somewhat withered and done. You don't want to steam it so long where it looses it's crunch because adding it into the pan will cook it slightly more depending on how long you leave it in.
- Pan fry- Here you simply cut the cabbage up and toss in into the pan at step 5. The cabbage will have to be cooked completely through this method inside the pan. Releasing water into the pan as well. So a tip is to add the cabbage, cook it to desired tenderness. Water will be released in dish and will provide a different mouth feel from where if you'd steamed it in the beginning.
