Best steak to use for the slow cooker

If you want steak any cut will work. Of course, something like filet mignon will be the most tender. But, do you really want to use that expensive cut in the crockpot?

The best steak or beef for the slow cooker is a beef with a ton of collagen. This breaks down and gives you those tender cuts we love. I suggest beef stew meat which is simply chuck roast chopped up, brisket or even boneless short ribs. You’ll get the max out of what you spend using that.

Making the steak and potatoes in the crockpot

  1. First, if you’re not using beef stew meat, chop the meat up into chunks. Add them to the crockpot then dice up the potatoes and slice the onions as well and place in the crockpot. Place the onions on top of everything if you place the steak and potatoes side by side as you see in the photos.
  2. In a small bowl, whisk together the steak sauce with the brown gravy mix. Then, add in the beef broth. Pour this mixture over the steak and potatoes in the crockpot.
  3. Cover then cook on low for 6-8 hours. I suggest giving the recipe a stir a time or two during the cook to rotate the food.
  4. When finished, the steak and potatoes will all be tender and they are ready to serve. Be careful, everything will be very hot.
