How To Make Baked BBQ Chicken Wings
Ingredients needed
- Chicken wings (party wings or whole wings)
- Barbecue sauce
- Barbecue seasoning rub (listed below or one of your choice)

Making the best baked bbq chicken wings
- Preheat the oven between 400F and 425F. Not all ovens go above 400F but the hotter the oven, the crispier the wings will be. Place the wire rack in the oven without anything on it.
- Now, in a bowl combine the ingredients for the spice rub. Then, pat the chicken wings as dry as possible. Coat them in vegetable oil then pour the seasoning over the wings and toss them until evenly coated. Note, do not add seasoning until you’re ready to place them in the oven. The salt will draw out moisture.
- Remove the wire rack from the oven, carefully. Spray with oil then place the chicken wings on the hot wire rack with at least an inch of space between each. Place the pan into the oven.
- Bake for 30 minutes then flip. Bake another 30 minutes and the wings should be finished cooking and crispy. Toss them in the barbecue sauce. You can serve them as is or place them bake in the oven for 10 minutes to make the sauce sticky. Note, you’ll loose the crispiness if you place them back in the oven.
- Once they are cooled, serve and enjoy.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Do you put barbecue sauce on wings before or after cooking?
Always after, the sugars will burn at the high heat that wings are baked or fried.
How do you get barbecue sauce to stick to chicken wings?
Using something like flour or cornstarch makes a huge difference. There’s either a component of these in the sauce itself that helps it stick or on the chicken batter or seasoning to help.
