How To Make Air Fryer Butternut Squash
Ingredients needed
- Butternut squash (see tips below)
- Brown sugar
- Salt & black pepper
- Air fryer
Tips for the best recipe
- Using cubed butternut squash will make the recipe the fastest. But, you can slice and clean an entire squash and use the leftovers for a soup. This recipe you’ll only need one pound of raw squash.
- You’ll only need a little brown sugar to help the caramelization of the butternut squash. But, I suggest adding a little honey before serving. Butternut squash and honey or maple go very well together.

Making the butternut squash in the air fryer
- First, preheat the air fryer to 350F.
- Then, prep the butternut squash cubes by tossing them in the seasoning. Note, do not season too early. The salt will make the butternut squash begin to release a bunch of water.
- Now, once the air fryer is heated toss in a handful of the cubed butternut squash. Do not stack them on one another but you can make an even layer across the air fryer basket. The cubes will shrink as they cook.
- Air fry the seasoned cubes for 15 minutes. Then, give the basket a good shake and cook for a remaining 10 minutes.
- The cubes should be soft and caramelized. Allow to cool a bit before serving because the insides will be hot. Serve alone or with a drizzle of honey or maple.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Can I add the butternut squash in the air fryer whole?
Yes you can if the butternut squash is small enough or you have a large air fryer. I suggest cooking at the same temperature of 350 because the element is so close to the squash. But, you will need to increase time to allow the squash to become tender.
Can I add garlic or other seasonings?
Salt and pepper are king but I do understand the desire for to the seasonings. However, other seasonings burn very quickly and that is the situation with using garlic powder for this recipe. Sugar burns as well but the temperature and time keeps that from happening and allows it to caramelize instead.
