Baked onions

Caramelized, sweet tasting onions are good enough to eat by themselves like roasted garlic.

But, cooking on the stove top can take some time and for the beginning cook, recipes like caramelized mushrooms and onions can be a little difficult.

Baked onions are much easier to make and taste just as good.

You can prep them ahead and save them for later for some classic recipes that use caramelized onions for topping.

Helpful tips before starting the recipe

  • Baked onions are easier to make but they still require you to pay attention to them. When onions caramelize they like to stick, this is a good thing and gives you the flavor you’re looking for. But, if you let them stick too long they burn. So, occasional turning is needed in this recipe.
  • Oil is your friend for onions and getting them to caramelize. You don’t want to submerge the onions in oil but you do not want them to look dry. The oil will help in the cooking process and make things much better and efficient.

How to roast the onions in the oven

  1. First, preheat the oven to 375F.
  2. Now, slice the onions and place in a baking dish. Not a sheet pan because it’s too thin on the bottom.
  3. Place the sliced onions in the baking dish and drizzle oil over then salt and black pepper. Be sure to mix the onions around in the oil and seasoning.
  4. Now, place into the oven for 45 minutes.
  5. Then, at 45 minutes remove from oven and move the onions around. Place back into the oven for one hour. If the onions look like their drying out add a little more oil.
  6. At this point the onions will be caramelized and brown. Not all of them will do this but to try and make all the onions caramelized you will burn the majority of them.
  7. Quick tip, when onions are finished add in a tablespoon of butter and let it melt. Then, mix the butter into the baked onions before serving.
