How To Make Air Fryer Plantains
Ingredients needed
- Plantains
- Vegetable oil
- Salt
Using maduro or green plantains for the recipe
In the recipe photos there are green plantains used. For the air fryer I recommend green plantains because they are much firmer and you can really get that crispier exterior if eaten fast enough. Ripe plantains are great for the stove top but they can make a big mess you’d have to clean in the air fryer.

Making the plantains in the air fryer
- To start, slice the plantains the long way and peel the outside skin to reveal the plantain. Depending on how green the plantain is you may need to cut the skin from the plantain. Slice the plantain in slices 1.5-2 inches thick.
- In a bowl, toss the plantains in vegetable oil very well. Massage them the oil to make sure each part is covered with oil to prevent premature burning. Season with salt to taste.
- Preheat the air fryer to 375F.
- Place the prepped plantains in the air fryer and cook for 12 minutes. Rotate them halfway through.
- When the time is up the outside will be crispy but they won’t stay crispy as they cool. They are ready to serve and enjoy.
Can you make crispy plantains in the air fryer?
Yes, you can but it isn’t worth the extra work in my opinion. You cannot crowd them and they need to be sliced thinly to become crispy and stay crispy once they are cooled. With the thin slicing, one plantain can produce a bunch of chips that you’d need to cook in the basket spaced apart in one layer. That could equal 3-4 batches of cooking in the air fryer.
