  • 1/2 sliced onion
  • 1/2 cup brown rice flour
  • 2 tablespoon tapioca flour
  • 2 tablespoon Granulated sweetener or sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 6 tablespoon milk or buttermilk

  • Slice onion into slices no thicker than 1/4 inch
  • Combine brown rice flour, tapioca flour, sweetener or sugar, salt and black pepper. Then add in milk or buttermilk to make batter
  • Heat oil or lard for frying
  • Batter onion one at a time, removing any excess batter
  • Begin frying if outside is cooking faster than you like lower the heat. If oil is too hot the batter will cook and the onions will be raw still.
  • Cook golden brown then serve

Helpful Recipe Tips

  • I tested the batter out using buttermilk, milk and even almond milk. These all work just fine based around personal preference.
  • Batter is on the thick side so after dipping be sure to dap off any excess.
