Gluten free fried onion rings are a great treat while watching tv or a side dish for dinner. These crispy onion rings are whipped together in no time with a taste of your favorite fast food restaurant.
Starting with my gluten free chicken tenders I wanted to explore the diet a bit more. I love and miss onions rings so having a better option is great for me. I had a thing for Sonic’s flavor with a little sweetness to the batter. This gave me a great base to start from and I can say I pulled it off. Let me show you step by step how I created this recipe and kept it gluten free as well!
Are Onion Rings Gluten Free
The actual onion itself is gluten free. The problem comes in the batter that is used which uses flour which has gluten in it. Yet, there is still a way to get that crispy texture in your onion rings without gluten added.
How To Make Gluten Free Onion Rings
First, the cutting part of the onion rings are so simple. Plan out how thick each onion ring will be because this will help in how much oil you add to the pan.
Next, combine all the ingredients for your flour. You can buy a gluten free flour mix but I normally make my own. It contains brown rice flour, tapioca flour, baking soda, salt, pepper and a little sugar or sweetener.
My recipe actually has no eggs at all because I didn’t like what they were doing to the texture of the onion rings.
Then, heat up oil to a medium to high temperature. You want to watch how hot the oil is to avoid burning the batter before the onion ring can cook a little.
Cook gluten free onion rings on each side until golden, remove and serve.
Helpful Recipe Tips
- I tested the batter out using buttermilk, milk and even almond milk. These all work just fine based around personal preference.
- Batter is on the thick side so after dipping be sure to dap off any excess.
